In a shocking incident in August 2016, Alan Hawe, a respected school vice principal, killed his wife Clodagh and their three children - Liam (13), Niall (11), and Ryan (6) - in their County Cavan home, Ireland.
Jacqueline Connolly, Clodagh's sister, has released a memoir titled Deadly Silence, revealing insights into Hawe's disturbing pornography addiction, which she believes contributed to his violent actions.
Jacqueline described the horror of discovering Alan's hidden life, stating: "I couldn't believe it when I was told. To me, Alan was boring. He was socially inept... very much involved in the church and the community."
Jacqueline emphasized that Hawe was perceived as a "pillar of the community" but lived a dual life, engaging in cross-dressing and using hidden email accounts for accessing pornographic material.
On the fateful day, Clodagh was reportedly planning a family holiday when Alan brutally attacked her with a hatchet and a knife. "He hit her in the head with the axe and stabbed her in the back," Jacqueline recounted.
After killing Clodagh, Hawe wrote a suicide note and proceeded to murder his children while they slept, using a knife to cut their throats.
In his chilling confession, Hawe wrote, "I think there was some sort of psychosis that made me enjoy that yet in the next moment I was the complete opposite. I'm sorry for how I murdered them all but I simply had no other way."
Jacqueline disclosed further atrocities, revealing that Hawe targeted specific areas to prevent the children from screaming, demonstrating a premeditated act of brutality.
Hawe's suicide note indicated fears of being "caught red-handed" and the shame that would follow. Jacqueline remarked on the darkness of his admission, stating, "I don't see it any way other than he enjoyed what he did."
Despite receiving counselling for his addiction, it remains uncertain whether Hawe viewed pornography during school hours, although his violent outburst is believed to stem from fear of exposure of his secrets.
In her memoir, Jacqueline criticizes the investigation into the murders, urging officials to release the findings of the Serious Crime Review Team.
