On July 2, 2022, Declan Devine, a 33-year-old man from Panfield Road, Wythenshawe, embarked on a taxi journey that ended in violence. During the ride, Devine and the driver had an argument, prompting the driver to cancel the fare once Devine entered a Tesco store.
As the taxi driver attempted to leave the area, Devine chased after him, trying to force open the car door. According to prosecutors, Devine then attacked the driver, leading to a physical altercation that left the victim motionless on the ground.
The attack resulted in the driver suffering bruising and swelling to both eyes, as well as an injury to his nose, necessitating hospital treatment.
In his testimony, the victim described ongoing emotional distress and financial loss due to the incident, stating, “I was in fear of my life.”
In addition to this assault, Devine faced sentencing for an earlier offense involving a glass bottle attack on May 14. He approached a victim from behind and struck him, resulting in minor injuries.
The court learned that Devine has a significant criminal history, with 15 convictions spanning 26 offenses, including common assault. His defense argued that he had shown remorse and had engaged in courses to manage his aggression.
Ultimately, Devine pled guilty to charges of wounding with intent and actual bodily harm. He was sentenced to five and a half years in prison, with the judge noting his extensive record of violence.
