XL Bully Dog Attack in Newport - Court Case Details

In a disturbing case heard at Newport Magistrates' Court, an XL Bully dog caused "horrific" injuries to a young girl, while its owner appeared indifferent to the situation. The incident occurred on October 7 in Nantyglo, Wales, where the girl was walking with her father.

Prosecutor Lisa Lewis explained that as the girl walked, she heard shouting and saw a dog charging towards her. "It reached her in seconds," Lewis recounted. The dog, named Rocco, jumped on her back and bit her arm as she attempted to protect herself.

In a panic, the girl ran to the road for help, but her attempts were met with inaction from the dog's owner, 37-year-old Justin Allison, who simply instructed the girl that he would be at his home nearby. "He did not offer any assistance at all," Lewis stated. It was only after the girl's mother arrived that the situation escalated, with the dog attempting to attack her as well.

The girl was later taken to Grange Hospital, where surgery was required to treat severe injuries, including tendon damage and cuts to her back. While her physical recovery is progressing, the long-term psychological effects remain uncertain.

Allison was found to be in possession of a prohibited XL Bully breed dog without an exemption certificate, leading to the dog being euthanized. Additionally, a search of Allison's home yielded a prohibited butterfly knife.

Facing multiple charges, Allison admitted to having a dangerously out-of-control dog that caused injury and possessing a dangerous breed and an offensive weapon. His sentencing is scheduled for January. He also faces repercussions from a drug-driving incident earlier in May.

On May 24, police officer PC Morgan noticed Allison driving erratically in a black Audi A4 at Lakeside retail park. Following a check, it was revealed that the vehicle lacked insurance. While Allison was inside Asda, PC Morgan observed him showing signs of drug use and subsequently tested him, revealing cocaine levels well above the legal limit.

Allison, who lives with his grandparents and struggles with mental health issues, received a driving ban for 16 months, alongside fines totaling £120 and additional costs of £85. The magistrates acknowledged his early guilty plea and financial circumstances in their ruling.
