Wigan Stabbing Incident: Esmaeel Mohamed Sentenced to Six Years

On July 18, a 19-year-old man named Esmaeel Mohamed attacked a victim in Wigan town centre and has now been jailed.

During the incident, Mohamed began to exhibit paranoid and aggressive behavior, prompting him to steal a large knife from a shop and exit onto the street.

As onlookers tried to intervene, Mohamed removed the knife from its packaging and approached his victim, demanding, "give me your phone." He then stabbed the victim in the back.

Prosecutor Eleanor Gleeson detailed that Mohamed inflicted multiple injuries on the victim, the most severe being a four centimetre wound to his lower back, as horrifying footage played in court depicted the distressing scene.

Following the attack, Mohamed temporarily left the scene before returning for a second assault. Police eventually arrived and subdued him with a taser.

The victim was transported to the hospital, though his injuries were not deemed life-threatening.

It was revealed that the victim and Mohamed were acquaintances but not close, and both had used cannabis prior to the incident. Mohamed pleaded guilty to robbery and section 18 wounding.

In mitigation, Mr Colin Buckle stated, "Mitigation doesn't reveal itself easily when someone approaches someone in the street and stabs them," emphasizing that Mohamed had no intention of contesting the charges.

Concerns regarding Mohamed's mental health were raised, with Mr Buckle sharing that he claimed to suffer from unspecified mental health issues, leading to questions about his random violent conduct.

Recorder Gavin McBride sentenced Mohamed, who had no prior convictions but received a caution for battery in 2018, to six years in custody, accompanied by an extended licence period of four years after release.

Mr McBride remarked on the perceived risk of further offences, thus supporting the decision for an extended sentence. Additionally, a restraining order was imposed, barring Mohamed from contacting the victim or approaching within 100 metres of him.
