On Thursday, December 12, 2024, an arrest was made following the deliberate arson of two vehicles in Wigan. Emergency services responded to the scene on Church Street shortly after 12:35am.
Footage captured during the incident shows flames rising and smoke billowing from a vehicle outside a residence, accompanied by a small explosion. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that one of the vehicles was intentionally set on fire.
A police investigation into the arson has been initiated, leading to the arrest of a 37-year-old man. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police stated: "Officers responded to reports of arson on Church Street at approximately 12:36am. It is thought that two vehicles were deliberately ignited. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. The suspect is being held on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and criminal damage."
Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour. A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service commented: "Shortly after 12:35am, we dispatched one fire engine from Hindley Community Fire Station to address the fire involving two vehicles on Church Street, Wigan. Our teams quickly arrived, utilizing a hose reel and two breathing apparatus to extinguish the flames. Firefighters collaborated with the police to ensure the area was safe before leaving after roughly one hour."
