On October 4, in Porth, Rhondda, a boys' night out turned violent when 27-year-old Liam Jones smashed a glass bottle over his own head and stabbed his friend, Robbie Thorburn, in the side. This shocking incident unfolded after an argument arose within the group regarding plans to go to a nightclub, which Jones opposed due to a prior ban.

The night began at a pub where Jones had been involved in disputes with another group. As tensions rose, he started shouting at his friends, prompting Thorburn and another friend, Callum Williams, to intervene.

During the confrontation, Jones unexpectedly punched Williams in the face, leading to a physical altercation between him and Thorburn. As Thorburn retreated, Jones grabbed a glass bottle, smashed it on his own head, and threatened Thorburn while advancing towards him.

In a moment of violence, Jones lunged at Thorburn, inflicting a 1.5cm puncture wound to his side. Following the attack, Thorburn fell to the ground, appearing lifeless and bleeding, prompting Jones to flee the scene.

Emergency services were summoned, and Thorburn was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where he received eight stitches for his injury.

After the incident, Jones was arrested and inquired about Thorburn's condition. He later admitted to charges of grievous bodily harm with intent and assault by beating.

In a victim statement delivered in court, Thorburn described the long-lasting effects of the attack, expressing difficulties with sleep and anxiety about his safety, particularly regarding his daughter. He mentioned that he no longer feels comfortable going out, fearing a repeat of the incident.

Williams echoed similar sentiments, revealing his ongoing fear of potential violence and the trauma of witnessing his friend in jeopardy that night.

During the court proceedings, Jones’ defense stated that he had been heavily intoxicated and that he felt "utterly ashamed" and "deeply remorseful" for his actions. Judge Jeremy Jenkins acknowledged that Jones' behavior was out of character but highlighted the serious injuries caused to both victims.

Ultimately, Jones was sentenced to 36 months in prison and issued a restraining order lasting five years.
