On February 12, at around 9.50pm, a violent incident occurred at the Lime Street Central pub in Liverpool, involving married couple Michael (39) and Jemma Edwards (31) and two women in their 60s, Louise and Millicent Kenny. The altercation began following an argument that Michael believed stemmed from Millicent laughing at Jemma's laugh.
The court heard that the Edwards were forcibly removed from the pub after the initial confrontation escalated. Outside, Michael knocked Millicent to the ground and continued to attack her, while Jemma also joined in the assault.
Louise Kenny sustained six fractures to her jaw, requiring emergency surgery and titanium plates, while Millicent was left with bruises and a nose injury that affected her sense of taste and smell.
The incident, captured on CCTV, prompted a public appeal for information, leading to the Edwards turning themselves in. Michael pleaded guilty to assault causing grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm, while Jemma pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm.
At sentencing, prosecutor Paul Blasbery detailed the harm caused, highlighting the severe injuries to Louise Kenny, which included permanent numbness and scarring on her face. The judge, Andrew Menary, condemned the couple's actions, stating that they behaved "like animals" during the assault.
Michael Edwards received a two-year prison sentence, while Jemma Edwards was given a 12-month sentence, suspended for 18 months, and mandated to complete 20 rehabilitation days and a 12-month mental health treatment course. As Michael was taken to the cells, Jemma was visibly emotional, embracing him in the dock.
