In a disturbing incident, Tyler Smith raped a woman after a night out at a pub in Farnworth, leading to a fit of rage that was captured on video. The events unfolded on July 16, 2023, when Smith met three women during their night out.
Following their time at the pub, the group returned to a residential property. There, police reports from Greater Manchester indicate that Smith began making unwanted advances towards one of the women, who clearly expressed her discomfort and told him not to touch her. Nonetheless, the 24-year-old Smith ignored her objections.
Shortly thereafter, the woman chose to leave and summoned a taxi home. Meanwhile, one woman went to sleep in a bedroom, while another decided to order a taxi to go home. It was at this point that Smith cornered the woman in the kitchen, attempting to kiss her.
As she tried to escape his grasp, Smith continued to grab her and insisted that he knew she wanted him. Despite her repeated pleas for him to stop, he proceeded to rape her.
The victim, understandably frightened, woke the second woman and asked Smith to leave. His reaction was one of intense anger, which was recorded on a mobile phone camera. Smith, who has no fixed address, later pleaded guilty to both sexual assault and rape.
On December 2, 2023, Smith was sentenced at Minshull Street Crown Court to five years and five months in prison, in addition to being placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
Detective Constable Jon Liversage from GMP's Bolton Criminal Investigation Department commented on the case, emphasizing the importance of coming forward to report such offenses. He stated: "No one should ever feel alone in such circumstances, and we will do all we can to provide necessary support and ensure justice is served."
He also highlighted the crucial reminder for everyone to respect personal boundaries and consent, urging anyone who has witnessed or experienced similar incidents to come forward.
Despite Smith's continued denial during police interviews, the bravery and resilience of the victims were instrumental in securing a successful prosecution, holding Smith accountable for his actions.
Detective Constable Liversage reiterated, "Anyone that has been a victim of a sexual offense, is concerned for someone's safety, or suspects criminal activity, should reach out to us. Our dedicated team will handle reports with care and ensure that offenders are brought to justice."
