A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder following the tragic stabbing of 12-year-old Leo Ross in a country park.

On Tuesday, Leo was attacked on a riverside path in the Hall Green area of Birmingham. He suffered fatal injuries and was rushed to the hospital, but sadly died around 7:30 PM despite medical efforts.

The suspect, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested approximately four hours after the incident. He has been charged with murder, six counts of assault, and possession of a bladed article.

Leo's family expressed their heartbreak in a statement, calling him an "amazing, kind, loving boy" and stating, “Not only has Leo’s life been taken, all of our lives have as well." They thanked the school, the police, and those supporting them during this horrific time.

Leo was a pupil at Christ Church Church of England Secondary Academy in Yardley Wood. It is believed he was walking home from school when the attack occurred. Bystanders quickly called emergency services to assist him.

West Midlands Police confirmed the charges and highlighted that the 14-year-old has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Monday. The police noted that the additional charges of assault did not involve the use of a knife.

Diane Henson, the executive headteacher at Leo's school, expressed her condolences, describing Leo as a "lively and happy young man" with many friends who adored him. The school plans to support the children and will open a book of condolence with the family’s permission.

“Our thoughts are with Leo’s family and all his friends today,” she added.
