On November 19, 2022, a tragic road accident occurred on the M6 near Leyland, resulting in the death of three-year-old Faye Dawson. The incident transpired around 5.50pm when driver Terence Unsworth, 79, swerved intentionally into oncoming traffic.
Mr Unsworth drove his Porsche Boxster onto the slip road at J28, making an abrupt U-turn into the third lane of the southbound motorway, directly into the path of Beth Dawson's Vauxhall Meriva, which had Faye seated in the back.
At Faye's inquest held at Preston coroner's court on December 3, her mother Beth Dawson recounted: "I can't remember how long it was into the journey, but I was travelling on the M6 when a car in front of me moved and I was confronted with car headlights right in front of me. I tried to take evasive action but there was no time. I blacked out."
An earlier inquest had already determined that Mr Unsworth's actions were "deliberate," but did not clarify the motivation behind driving the wrong way.
After the collision, Faye was rushed to the Royal Preston Hospital but was sadly pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination revealed her cause of death as multiple injuries.
Coroner Richard Taylor delivered a verdict of death by road traffic collision and extended his condolences to the bereaved family, stating: "I can't begin to imagine what you have had to live through and you have my eternal sympathies for that."
After the inquest, Ms Dawson expressed her profound sorrow: "Today has been horrible for all of us, having to relive the events of November 19 and the accident which took away my lovely Faye's life."
She shared her heartbreak, saying: "A family day out turned painfully into the worst day of our lives. I am truly heartbroken Faye has been tragically taken away. Faye was my one and only child, my daughter, and my best friend."
Describing Faye, she remarked: "She was the most amazing, craziest, sassy, gorgeous, caring little girl. Faye enjoyed singing and dancing and was clever, loving nursery, and was advanced for her age."
Ms Dawson lamented: "My poor babe should have had her whole life ahead of her. To have her life so cruelly snatched away is something I will never get over. No child should leave this world before their parent."
She concluded with deep anguish: "Neither this inquest nor the earlier inquest into the death of the other party has been able to establish why he chose to drive the wrong way. His actions were inexplicable, and it eats away at me, making it impossible to achieve any kind of justice or closure. Our lives will never be the same. We all love and miss you forever, our Faye."
