Police have issued a warning regarding online comments following the tragic death of 15-year-old Harvey Willgoose, who was fatally stabbed at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield on Monday afternoon, February 3.
A murder investigation is currently underway, with a 15-year-old boy arrested in connection with the incident on the same day.
In an update released today, South Yorkshire Police urged the public to think carefully about their online posts related to the incident, emphasizing the importance of not jeopardizing a fair trial.
A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police stated: "We are urging our communities to avoid online speculation and to refrain from identifying individuals believed to be involved in this tragic incident to ensure justice for the victim and his family. Identifying suspects can prejudice court proceedings and compromise a fair and accurate trial."
The spokesperson continued: "At the heart of this devastation is a grieving family, deserving of respect and privacy during this difficult time. We will take action against anyone who poses a risk to ongoing proceedings. Please consider the implications of what you share online."
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Harvey's sister, Sophie Willgoose, encouraged people to 'hug your loved ones a little tighter' as she paid tribute, stating: "My heart is broken into a million pieces I love you so much Harvey."
The incident occurred at 12:17 PM on Monday, prompting All Saints High School to go on lockdown for the second time in a week. Emergency services and forensic investigators have been present at the school since the stabbing, while tributes such as flowers and balloons have been left outside in memory of the teenager.
A note attached to flowers from one of Harvey's teachers described him as 'always polite and friendly'. It read: “I only taught you a few times in year 7, but I remember you well. Despite being occasionally a little too energetic, you were always polite and friendly. I am so sorry this has happened.”
Assistant Chief Constable Lindsey Butterfield of South Yorkshire Police expressed: “Our thoughts are with the family of the boy who has sadly lost his life, his friends, and the entire school community. We understand the distress and concern this tragic event has caused, and our officers will remain on scene and in the local area to provide reassurance as our investigation continues."
She added: "While we are in the initial stages of our inquiries, we are working quickly to understand how this tragedy unfolded. We encourage anyone with relevant information to come forward, contacting South Yorkshire Police online or by calling 101, quoting incident number 327 of February 3, 2025."
