An 80-year-old man, Bhim Kohli, has been named by neighbours as the victim allegedly killed by a group of young children in a park. Mr Kohli was described as a devoted father-of-three and grandfather-of-two.
Leicestershire Police have initiated a murder investigation following Mr Kohli's death in hospital due to injuries sustained at Franklin Park in Braunstone Town, Leicestershire, around 6.30pm on Sunday. Authorities have arrested a 14-year-old boy and girl, along with two girls aged 12, on suspicion of murder.
The assault is believed to have occurred near the park entrance on Bramble Way while Mr Kohli was walking his dog. He was reportedly wearing a black jumper and grey jogging bottoms when he was seriously attacked by the group.
The assailants fled the scene before emergency services arrived. Neighbour Deep Kaila shared with the Mirror: "I've known him for 35 years; we were good friends."
Kaila added, "His family are devastated. He was a skinny, fit man who often spent time at the allotment across from his house. He had two sons and a daughter, all grown up, along with two grandsons."
"He owned a factory in Leicester that made jumpers and cardigans but retired many years ago. It's tragic what happened."
Mr Kohli's wife is being comforted by their sons Baul and Varinder and daughter Susan during this difficult time.
Det Insp Emma Matts, senior investigating officer for Leicestershire Police, stated: "Sadly, following the victim's death last night, this has now become a murder investigation. Officers are working diligently to establish the details of the attack and several arrests have been made as we seek to understand what transpired."
She urged anyone who witnessed anything or has information related to the incident to come forward: "Were you in Franklin Park or Bramble Way around 6.30pm on Sunday night? Did you see the attack itself? From the description given, did you see the victim before it happened or possibly a group of young people leaving afterwards?"
A scene preservation will remain at the park while investigations continue. Local officers are conducting reassurance patrols and are available to speak with community members who may have concerns.
Due to prior police contact with Mr Kohli, there will be a voluntary referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC).
