Southport Dance Class Murders: Axel Rudakubana Case

On July 29, in Southport, Axel Rudakubana murdered three young girls during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class. He infamously told police, "I'm glad they're dead," demonstrating a shocking lack of remorse.

During the prosecution at Liverpool Crown Court, it was revealed that Rudakubana exhibited no regret as he was held in custody following the brutal knife attack, which also left multiple others injured.

On January 23, during his sentencing hearing, Rudakubana was expelled from the courtroom for interrupting by claiming he felt unwell. He is set to receive a life sentence for the murders of Bebe King, Alice da Silva Aguiar, and Elsie Dot Stancombe.

In court, Deanna Heer KC recounted Rudakubana's chilling comments while under arrest: “It’s a good thing those children are dead… I’m so glad… so happy.”

Heer described the tragic circumstances, stating, "Three children were killed, two of whom suffered particularly horrific injuries," which she characterized as sadistic. Additionally, she reported that Rudakubana attempted to kill 10 others, inflicting stab wounds, including to their backs as they tried to escape.

Investigation revealed that Rudakubana had researched similar atrocities prior to the attack, with no evidence of a political or religious motive. His sole intent appeared to be to kill, specifically targeting the youngest and most vulnerable to instill fear and outrage.

As Rudakubana was escorted from the dock, families of the victims reacted with disbelief to his repeated claims regarding his fitness to be sentenced. His defense attorney, Stanley Reiz KC, cited concerns for his mental state, noting, “He has not eaten for a number of days, he has drunk very little over that period of time,” suggesting this impacted his ability to cope in high-pressure situations.

Moments later, a police officer informed the court that Rudakubana had been assessed by medical staff, who deemed him fit for proceedings but recommended a second medical opinion.

Mr Justice Goose decreed, “That can continue whilst we continue with proceedings.”

The hearing is ongoing.
