A Sky News reporter broke down in tears during a live broadcast while recounting the 'distressing' details of the Southport attack that resulted in the deaths of three children.
On the day Axel Rudakubana is due to be sentenced, Sarah-Jane Mee reported live from outside Liverpool Crown Court. Earlier this week, the 18-year-old admitted to killing three girls - nine-year-old Alice da Silva Aguiar, six-year-old Bebe King, and seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe - in a knife attack during a Taylor Swift dance class in Merseyside on July 29 last year.
Rudakubana also pleaded guilty to the attempted murders of eight other children, whose identities cannot be revealed for legal reasons, as well as the attack on class instructor Leanne Lucas and businessman John Hayes.
While reporting outside the court on Thursday afternoon, Ms. Mee conveyed heart-wrenching details from the sentencing hearing. She referenced a statement by prosecutor Deanna Heer KC, emphasizing the distressing nature of the information she was about to share.
In her report, Ms. Mee detailed that Mr. Hayes was present in the building during the attack. He attempted to intervene, stating that Rudakubana “swiped with a knife as he tried to grab hold of the weapon.” Mr. Hayes was stabbed in the leg and fell to the ground while calling for help.
Ms. Mee continued: "The court heard that window cleaners, driving by, noticed the class instructor, Leanne Lucas, covered in blood as she shouted 'someone's stabbing the kids.' One window cleaner tried to enter the building but retreated upon seeing Rudakubana at the top of the stairs with a knife."
"At the top of the stairs, they found Rudakubana standing over Bebe King's body with a kitchen knife. One of the window cleaners picked her up and carried her out, visibly shocked by her injuries. Police arrived to find chaotic scenes and people in a state of panic,” she added.
As Ms. Mee recounted these details, she paused visibly shaken. Her voice trembled, and she remarked: "I'll just take a breath after that."
Once she regained composure, Ms. Mee apologized to viewers, saying, "Sorry, it's just so distressing, isn't it?"
Resuming her commentary, she stated: "We're here for those girls and their families, so I'll try not to get upset because it's such an important day for them, and this is horror that came to their door."
During the sentencing hearing, Rudakubana was ordered removed from the dock after he began shouting repeatedly. Family members expressed their outrage, with one shouting “coward” as he shouted, “It’s not my fault, I feel ill,” calling for medical assistance.
Horrific CCTV footage presented in court showed a child attempting to flee the building but being pulled back inside, prompting gasps and sobs from the public gallery. One woman in attendance covered her face in distress, comforted by others nearby.
Furthermore, the court heard that Rudakubana, in custody, expressed, “I’m glad they’re dead.” Prosecutors described the nature of the victims' injuries as “difficult to explain as anything other than sadistic.”
Rudakubana is set to be sentenced for these horrific killings later today.
