Ryan Wellings Acquitted of Manslaughter: Kiena Dawes Tragic Case

In a case that has drawn significant attention, Ryan Wellings, 30, has been cleared of manslaughter in connection with the death of his partner, Kiena Dawes, 23, who took her own life after describing their relationship as a "nightmare". Wellings faced charges of manslaughter, assault, and coercive and controlling behaviour.

The six-week trial at Preston Crown Court revealed that Ms. Dawes had endured a two-year abusive relationship with Wellings, leading to her tragic death on July 22, 2022. It was alleged that Ms. Dawes committed suicide as a result of domestic violence inflicted by Wellings. Upon her death, she left behind a note stating, “Ryan Wellings killed me,” before leaving their nine-month-old daughter with a friend.

Today, January 13, the jury found Wellings guilty of assault and prolonged domestic violence but acquitted him of manslaughter. His trial marked a significant legal moment as he was the first defendant tried before a jury for the unlawful killing of a partner following her suicide in the context of domestic violence.

'Nightmare' Relationship

Ms. Dawes, a hairdresser from Fleetwood, faced emotional instability compounded by the abuse she suffered at the hands of Wellings, who had a history of violence and substance abuse. Early in their relationship, she was captivated by Wellings, a landscape gardener from Bispham. The defendant had a prior conviction for assaulting his ex-partner, the mother of his twin daughters, and quickly became possessive, tattooing her name and proposing marriage within months.

However, the relationship deteriorated, with Ms. Dawes describing her "fairytale" turned "nightmare". The jury was presented with extensive evidence of text messages detailing the abuse, including physical violence and threats from Wellings, who exhibited controlling behaviour and financial exploitation.

Prosecutor Paul Greaney KC described Wellings as an “entitled, aggressive bully”. The abuse included physical violence and psychological manipulation, while Ms. Dawes, despite warnings from friends and family, remained in a cycle of break-up and reconciliation with Wellings. He even attempted to convince her to continue a sexual relationship after threatening attacks.

Kiena Left a Suicide Note

In a poignant moment during the trial, the jury heard Ms. Dawes’ suicide note read aloud. It expressed her deep struggle, stating, “I was murdered. Ryan Wellings killed me. He ruined every bit of strength I had left.” Wellings claimed that injuries inflicted upon Ms. Dawes were accidental or a result of restraining her, denying any malicious intent.

Following a final incident of violence where Ms. Dawes required hospital treatment, police were alerted, leading to Wellings' arrest. However, he violated his bail conditions without facing jail time, leaving Ms. Dawes feeling abandoned by law enforcement. Tragically, she took her life shortly after.

In court, it was noted that Ms. Dawes had been a “troubled young lady” who had faced her own challenges beyond her relationship with Wellings. Prior to her relationship with him, she had made multiple suicide attempts.

The sentencing of Wellings is still pending. This case highlights a growing concern in England and Wales, where over 700 domestic abuse-related deaths were reported between 2020 and 2023, including 216 suspected victim suicides.
