A woman, referred to as Girl B for legal reasons, testified in court that she was raped and sexually abused by three men from Rochdale during her childhood. She stated she had attempted to 'pretend it has not happened' despite the trauma she endured starting at age 13.
During her third day on the witness stand, Girl B described one of her alleged abusers, saying: "That man is a rapist and a paedophile." When questioned about inconsistencies in her account, she responded: "Do you know how many people I have been abused by over the years? It's probably close to a hundred."
The trial is taking place at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court, where eight men are accused of sexual offences. Among them is Kasir Bashir, who is defended by barrister Shahnawaz Khan. Girl B alleges that she was abused by Bashir and two other defendants, Mohammed Zahid and Mushtaq Ahmed, who allegedly ran shops in Rochdale.
Girl B had a troubled childhood and was in care from the age of seven. While being cross-examined on February 13, she acknowledged having seen Mr. Bashir after the alleged incidents. She stated that, during a police interview, she had said the encounter hadn't 'bothered' her, later clarifying, "I wouldn't say it didn't bothered me. I was still in that time when it was being blocked out."
She recounted an incident where Bashir allegedly raped her after driving her to a house in Chadderton. Mr. Khan questioned her about her initial report to police, where she mentioned three Asian males were involved, while in a subsequent video interview she said two. The woman explained, "When you have something in your brain that's happened it comes out in a pattern... my mind is boggled."
She confirmed to the judge that if she had stated to police there were three males initially, that was inaccurate. After her second interview, she was shown the area around Chadderton to find the house but admitted she was not actively observing her surroundings.
Mr. Khan noted that his client, Mr. Bashir, did not deny the existence of a house in Chadderton, claiming he had not been to that property. Girl B also disclosed that she used cannabis and alcohol as coping mechanisms, saying, "I didn't want to feel what I was going through."
She reiterated that Bashir raped her in a bedroom, while asserting that he operated a shoe stall at Rochdale's indoor market, despite Mr. Khan's claims he sold fabrics. She firmly stated, "I remember that man's face."
During the cross-examination by Trevor Parry-Jones, representing Mushtaq Ahmed, the woman identified Ahmed as 'Mr. Maria Fashions', stating she recognized distinctive features of her abusers despite inconsistencies in her memories. She firmly asserted, "That man is a rapist and a paedophile." Parry-Jones noted the lack of description of a finger deformity on Ahmed, to which she responded that not noticing a detail did not negate the abuse.
Girl B pointed out that her memories may continue evolving due to trauma: "More things are going to come to me as time goes on. That's how it was. I can't help it." She characterized this as "broken memory."
The trial involves allegations of a series of sexual offences against two girls, occurring between 2001 and 2006. The accused men, primarily taxi drivers and market stall traders, are said to have 'passed around' the girls for sex before discarding them. All men deny the charges.
