In a shocking development, Reynhard Sinaga, Britain's most prolific rapist, was reportedly targeted in a planned prison attack by inmates at HMP Wakefield in July. The attack was narrowly avoided thanks to the intervention of prison guards.
Sinaga, 41, was sentenced in January 2020 to a minimum of 40 years in prison for 159 sex offenses, including the rape of 136 young men in Manchester. He lured his victims by administering a date rape drug.
Sources indicate that Sinaga is viewed as a 'clear target' within the prison system, with one source stating to The Sun: "He is arrogant and universally loathed. He was seconds away from extremely serious harm and remains in danger."
Jack McRae, 32, has been charged with attempted grievous bodily harm against Sinaga and has since been relocated to Frankland Prison in Durham.
Reynhard Sinaga arrived in the UK as a student from Indonesia in 2005. Over the next decade, he drugged and raped young men at his Manchester flat. A graduate with a Master's degree, he would survey the streets, looking for vulnerable young men who had separated from their friends during nights out.
Detective Sergeant Kimberley Hames-Evans described how Sinaga would prey on young men: "He would just go prowling the streets looking for his victims, young guys on a night out in Manchester city centre with friends."
Once inside his flat, victims would be drugged and assaulted. Sinaga recorded these attacks, keeping personal belongings as 'trophies,' alongside accessing their personal social media accounts to collect their private photos.
The grotesque cataloging of his crimes involved hundreds of hours of footage, with Sinaga boasting about his 'relationships' to friends, while concealing the true nature of his actions. Law enforcement discovered approximately 3TB of data—including videos of assaults—during a police search, exposing a horrific reality with numbers of victims escalating from 15 per year in 2014 to 60 in 2017.
Detective Sergeant Hames-Evans noted, "We get lots of reports of rape but seldom do you actually see one happen with your own eyes," describing the footage found on Sinaga's phone as "horrendous".
