Philip Hamer Trial: Sexual Offences Against Children

A former professional ice hockey player and TV extra, Philip Hamer, 34, from Salford, has admitted to committing sexual offences against children and acknowledged that people may harbor ‘a lot of hatred’ towards him.

Hamer gave evidence in his defense for the first time during his trial at Manchester Crown Court. He has already pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including engaging in sexual activity with four teenage girls, and is currently facing allegations of sexually assaulting and raping several women and girls, which he denies. The accusations involve six complainants.

During the court proceedings, Hamer was questioned about how ‘right thinking people’ might perceive his admitted behavior. He stated, “I think they would have a lot of hatred towards me, and think it’s not somebody they would want to associate themselves with.” When asked if this assessment was correct, he replied, “Yes, I believe they would.”

Hamer further explained his reasons for committing the offences he has admitted, telling the jury: “I believe that I am capable of acting like a 30-year-old man at times... I think I possibly did some things out of loneliness.”

Regarding the charges he is contesting, Hamer stated, “I accept my guilt of the charges I believe I have definitely committed. I believe I have got to fight for the things I didn’t do, that’s why I am here,” insisting that any sexual interactions alleged by the complainants had been consensual.

Hamer shared details of his background, revealing he is from Boothstown in Salford and left school at 13 after his father's death affected his studies. He briefly worked at a shop near Altrincham ice rink before pursuing a career in roller hockey and ice hockey. When asked about his abilities, he modestly said: “Yes, I was ok, I think.” He also mentioned occasions of being paid for playing, noting that sometimes it was just for the love of the game.

Later in his life, he became a letting agent and worked as an extra for TV shows, including Coronation Street and Hollyoaks. He also contributed to Manchester United as part of the club's ‘executive welcome team’ and worked at Manchester City’s ‘fan zone’ along with other events.

Currently, Hamer, residing on Birchfield Drive in Worsley, faces serious charges involving six alleged victims, which include eight counts of rape, seven counts of sexual assault, six counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and one count of sexual activity with a child.
