Murder Trial Unfolds: The Orchestrated Killing of Liam Smith

An elaborate plot resulted in the death of 38-year-old electrician Liam Smith, who was lured from his home in Shevington, Wigan, and shot on the evening of November 24th last year. Acid was poured over his body in a highly orchestrated attack, as the trial at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court has revealed.

Prosecutors allege that Smith's murder was the result of a revenge plot carried out by Michael Hiller, 39, from Sheffield, and his partner, Rachel Fulstow, 37, from York. Hiller has confessed to manslaughter but denies the murder charge. Fulstow denies all charges, including murder and perverting the course of justice.

The prosecution highlighted Fulstow's brief romantic link to Smith in 2019 as a catalyst. Hiller, seemingly enraged by their past, allegedly sought vengeance under the misbelief that Fulstow had been wronged. Fulstow's actions and communications are under scrutiny, signifying potential complicity in the tragic event.

As the investigation unfolds, the timeline of events paints a chilling sequence of premeditated actions. On November 2nd, Hiller conducted an initial reconnaissance trip to Wigan, possibly with guidance from Fulstow. In the early hours of November 24th, Hiller commenced his journey from Sheffield, backed by a cover story crafted by Fulstow.

Having disguised himself in a high-visibility jacket and head torch, Hiller drew Smith from his home before the fatal shooting and subsequent chemical attack. Smith's discovery at around 7pm revealed the scene’s hazardous nature, with emergency teams handling the chemical exposure.

Evidence presented at court includes internet searches made by Fulstow post-murder, searching terms like "premeditated" and even embarking on a vacation post-incident, reflecting a calculated attempt to escape notice.
