Mother Caught Drug-Driving - Abigail Lloyd's Case

Abigail Lloyd, a 34-year-old mother, was caught drug-driving after her Mini Cooper's registration was flagged by police while she was on the M60 motorway, near junction two for Stockport, in June last year. She tested more than three times the legal limit for cannabis.

During the court proceedings in Tameside, it was revealed that an officer detected the smell of cannabis coming from her vehicle after she was ordered to stop on the hard shoulder. When questioned, Lloyd admitted to using cannabis to cope with her post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), claiming she had smoked it the night before and was unaware it remained in her system.

Lloyd was fined £80 along with £117 in costs and surcharges after admitting to drug-driving. The prosecution, led by Shazia Aslam, detailed how PC Garner observed Lloyd's vehicle around 10:30 AM and could smell cannabis upon stopping her.

After providing a saliva sample that tested positive, Lloyd was taken to Cheadle Heath police station where a blood sample revealed a tetrahydrocannabinol level of 6.5, significantly above the legal limit of two.

Representing herself in court, Lloyd expressed her struggles with PTSD and mentioned that her cannabis use was a form of self-medication. She acknowledged her mistake, stating, "I was not aware how it was still in my system. I do apologise." She also noted that her prior conviction had led to her license plate being flagged.

As a consequence of her actions, Lloyd was banned from driving for 12 months.
