Morsal Mohammed Naim, 31, is on trial at Manchester Crown Court, charged with the murder of her two-year-old daughter, Omra Wali Jan.

Prosecutors allege that Naim ‘shook’ Omra, resulting in severe head injuries that led to her tragic death on February 9, 2024.

Omra was reportedly born in Afghanistan and lived with her father's family until she moved to the North West in September 2023 to reside with her parents, Naim and Firooz Wali Jan, in Levenshulme.

Prosecutor John Elvidge KC stated, “During that time Omra suffered very serious physical abuse and both parents have pleaded guilty to charges of child cruelty, specifically related to deliberate burning injuries on Omra’s hand, neck, and upper left arm.”

Elvidge further explained, “Ms Naim is also charged with murder as the prosecution claims she is responsible for the severe traumatic head injuries that caused Omra’s death, inflicted during a violent shaking.”

Emergency services were called to their home on November 20, 2023, at around 6.40 PM, by a relative who reported that Omra had ‘choked’ and was not breathing.

Upon arrival, paramedics found Omra unconscious and in cardiac arrest. Naim was present and assisted by a neighbour who provided interpretation, as Mr. Wali Jan was at work.

Omra was transported to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, receiving adrenaline and resuscitation efforts to restore her heartbeat.

The prosecutor noted that paramedics and medical staff found numerous bruises and marks on Omra’s head and body, including patterned scars on her right hand, neck, and upper left arm.

A CT scan revealed Omra had sustained devastating brain injuries, multiple retinal hemorrhages, and healing rib fractures.

Despite being intubated and ventilated, life support was withdrawn with the High Court's consent on February 9, 2024, leading to her death.

A post-mortem concluded that head injuries were the cause of death. The prosecution alleges these injuries resulted from a deliberate and forceful shaking.

Ms. Naim denies all allegations of assault and any intent to cause serious harm to her daughter.

Currently without a fixed abode, she maintains her not guilty plea to the murder charge.

The trial, expected to last several weeks, continues.
