Mobile Phone Fraud Investigation in Greater Manchester

Today, a man was arrested by detectives from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) who are investigating a 'highly sophisticated' mobile phone fraud operation that may have affected numerous victims beyond Greater Manchester.

As part of their ongoing investigation, officers from GMP's Economic Crime Unit executed warrants at four addresses in the Oldham area during dawn.

A 37-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of fraud and is currently being questioned by the police.

The inquiry was launched after members of the public reported that they believed they had fallen victim to fraud, prompting collaboration between GMP and the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit.

Victims reported receiving calls from individuals impersonating their mobile network providers. They were convinced to upgrade their contracts under the impression that they would receive a new handset.

However, victims did not receive the latest model they were promised.

According to GMP, when victims contacted the providers about unexpected deliveries, they were instructed to send the packages to a 'returns' address. These addresses are believed to be 'mule addresses' designed to retain possession of the devices before they are circulated within the criminal network.

Investigations suggest that some of the stolen phones may be sent abroad.

Detective Inspector Tim Flint of GMP's Economic Crime Unit stated: "Reports of fraud are always taken seriously, and we will thoroughly investigate any evidence of criminal activity. We believe this is a highly sophisticated fraud affecting many potential victims outside of Greater Manchester."

“While we have made an arrest and confiscated suspected stolen mobile phones, we are still in the preliminary stages of our investigation. I urge the public to remain vigilant regarding the risk of fraud."

“We are committed to combating fraud, and we will work diligently to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Your vigilance is crucial; if you notice something suspicious or too good to be true, please inform us so we can take action."
