A thief who used an e-bike to snatch mobile phones has been convicted following a Snapchat message bragging about his exploits. Michael 'Mickey' O'Leary, 20, was linked to several offences in Manchester city centre.
On April 11, this year, several stolen phones were tracked via the Find My Phone app to an address, where more stolen phones were recovered. These devices were all reported stolen the same day.
Investigating officers examined a suspect's phone and discovered a video clip showing multiple phones on a kitchen counter, accompanied by the message '10 minutes in town.'
Through diligent investigation, the North Manchester Neighbourhood Crime Team (NCT) identified O'Leary as the perpetrator, despite the account being registered anonymously through an associate, according to Greater Manchester Police (GMP).
The police released footage showing one of the phones being snatched from a man as O'Leary sped by on his e-bike on Oldham Road. The victim quickly gave chase.

O'Leary, from Miles Platting, was convicted of four counts of theft, one count of robbery, and a breach of bail. He was sentenced to four years and eight months in a young offenders institution.
Detective Constable Nicholas Kershaw of the City of Manchester Neighbourhood Crime Team stated: "This investigation involved a lot of background work, including follow-up of CCTV enquiries and evidence, leading to this individual's sentencing."
He emphasized that this outcome demonstrates their commitment to tackling crime, regardless of how organized the offender may be. The police will continue their efforts to ensure Greater Manchester remains a safe place to live, work, and visit.
Detective Constable Kershaw also urged the public to remain vigilant while using their phones in public. “Be cautious and keep your phone concealed in a bag or pocket to deter opportunistic criminals," he advised.
Leaving mobile phones or valuable items visible can attract unwanted attention. Be aware of your surroundings, as these types of thefts can occur rapidly, often within just 20 seconds.
