Two men from Manchester have been convicted of conspiring to break into cash machines across the North West. Matthew Doyle and Michael Waine faced charges at Manchester Crown Court related to ATM attacks in Lancaster and Berwick Upon Tweed.
Prosecutors detailed two incidents, with the first taking place in Lancaster on October 11, 2019, and the second in Berwick Upon Tweed on March 4, 2020. These well-planned attacks involved the use of crowbars, angle grinders, and even explosives.
At the Lancaster station, footage revealed the men trying to access the ATM for over an hour before fleeing, leaving behind several items, including an angle grinder. DNA analysis linked these to the suspects, particularly to a man named Craig Jepson, who had previously admitted guilt.
The Berwick Upon Tweed attack saw the use of explosives to access the cash machine. Here too, DNA and fingerprint evidence, alongside CCTV footage, played a crucial role in identification.
The sentences of the accused reflected their involvement in a series of highly coordinated crimes, although specific charges related to causing explosions were not proven against all individuals.
