Nurse Lucy Letby is on trial, accused of attempting to poison a twin baby with insulin while working at the Countess of Chester Hospital's neonatal unit. The incidents are said to have occurred between June 2015 and June 2016, affecting several infants during that period.
Specifically, prosecutors claim Letby deliberately poisoned an infant on April 9, 2016, which allegedly led to a sudden collapse in the baby's twin brother, causing him to stop breathing. Both twins thankfully recovered and were discharged later.
Letby, originally from Hereford, denies any wrongdoing. During police interviews, she insisted that if insulin was administered to the baby, it was unintentional and not her doing. She suggested it could have been present in some of the fluids the child received.
Consultant clinical scientist Dr. Anna Milan testified in court, indicating that tests confirmed the insulin was artificially introduced rather than naturally produced by the baby's pancreas.
The court was informed that a controlled supply of insulin was present at the unit, stored in a secure fridge accessible to nursing staff. A historical log of insulin vials was presented, showing careful management of the supply.
The trial is ongoing, with more hearings expected to shed light on this complex and sensitive case.
