Lucy Letby Trial: A Nurse Faces Grave Allegations

In a high-profile trial at Manchester Crown Court, nurse Lucy Letby stands accused of the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of ten others between June 2015 and June 2016. Letby denies all charges.

Letby allegedly used methods such as injecting air and administering insulin to harm infants at the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital, where she worked.

This week marked a significant turn as Letby appeared in court for the first time as a witness. Her defense, led by Ben Myers KC, questioned her about the care she provided to hundreds of babies during that period. Letby emphatically denied having any malicious intent.

The court was also presented with a poignant note found at Letby's residence, wherein she wrote statements such as "I killed them on purpose because I'm not good enough". Letby claimed these were expressions of self-doubt and stress accumulated from her removal from the neonatal unit.

The trial delved into Letby's background, highlighting her nursing journey from the University of Chester to her dedication to child care. She expressed the emotional toll of the allegations, mentioning she battled depression and thoughts of self-harm.

The court has prohibited the release of details concerning the identities of the alleged victims and their families. The trial continues as further evidence and testimonies are considered.
