A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of 28-year-old backpacker Danielle McLaughlin in India. Vikat Bhagat, a local man, was found guilty on February 14 at the District and Sessions Court in south Goa.
Danielle McLaughlin, from Buncrana in Co Donegal, Ireland, was discovered dead in a secluded location in Canacona, Goa, in March 2017. Her body was found by a farmer in a remote field, the day after she had been celebrating the Hindu festival of Holi with a female Australian friend at a nearby beach hut.
A post-mortem examination revealed that Ms McLaughlin suffered cerebral damage and neck constriction leading to her death.
Her family expressed relief at the verdict, with her mother, Andrea Brannigan, and sister, Joleen McLaughlin Brannigan, stating: “There was no other suspect or gang involved in Danielle’s death. Bhagat was solely responsible for cruelly ending her beautiful life.”
The family detailed their painful eight-year journey through legal proceedings, which unfolded thousands of miles from their home. They expressed gratitude for the legal representation they received throughout the trial.
“We are thankful for the support from our lawyer in Goa, Mr. Vikram Varma, and from our legal representative in Ireland, Desmond Doherty,” they added.
They reflected on the difficulties faced over the eight-year trial, noting the importance of remaining respectful of the Indian legal system throughout the ordeal.
“We now hope that Danielle can rest in peace, and that we as a family can find comfort knowing that her murderer has been convicted,” they stated.
Irish Deputy Premier Simon Harris also commented on the verdict, praising Danielle's family, particularly her mother, for their determination through their tragedy. He emphasized the ongoing support from the UK and Ireland's consular services in seeking justice in this case.
“While nothing can ease the pain of their loss, I hope this verdict offers some closure. My thoughts remain with them as they grieve the loss of their beloved daughter and sister. May Danielle rest in peace,” he concluded.
