On February 13, a significant operation by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) resulted in 65 arrests across Stockport.
Officers executed 10 warrants and conducted multiple operations throughout the area, deploying a 'battering ram' to access properties. One noteworthy incident occurred in Cheadle Hulme, where officers, accompanied by the Manchester Evening News, discovered a large cannabis farm.
During the raid, mature cannabis plants valued at approximately £300,000 were seized.
In addition to the arrests, police operations included 145 vehicle stops, 55 traffic offence reports, 13 stop and searches, 3 vehicle seizures, and 22 public engagement activities. The targeted warrants addressed various suspected offences, including drug-related crimes and vehicle thefts.
This operation was part of Operation AVRO, a GMP initiative that reallocates resources monthly to different districts in Greater Manchester, focusing on crimes that locals have reported as concerns.
Chief Superintendent Lewis Hughes, Stockport's Commander, stated to the M.E.N.: "Operation Avro is taking place across Stockport. We're looking to apprehend wanted criminals in our communities and have made several arrests." He emphasized the operation's dual focus on community engagement and visibility, reinforcing GMP's commitment to combating crimes like burglary and vehicle theft.
GMP's actions were guided by information from local residents, which facilitated further investigations before the warrants were executed.
In Cheadle Hulme, a drone was used for initial surveillance after public tips indicated a suspected cannabis farm. The drone detected unusual heat levels from the property, a potential indicator of cannabis cultivation.
In a statement on February 14, Chief Supt Hughes reflected on the operation, saying: "Throughout the day, we tackled crime and criminals in our communities, executed search warrants, and made arrests. Our efforts depend on the information and intelligence provided by the public."
He continued to commend the community for engaging with officers during the operation and expressing their concerns. “Operation AVRO is a flagship initiative showcasing the ongoing work across Greater Manchester in our battle against criminality."
