A former Greater Manchester Police officer, Dean Dempster, has confessed to multiple child sex offences and is likely to face a long prison sentence for public protection. The 35-year-old ex-officer, who previously admitted to sexually assaulting a six-year-old while on duty, has now pled guilty to eight additional charges.
Appearing via video link from HMP Forest Bank at Liverpool Crown Court on September 4, Dempster faced charges including two counts of misconduct in public office and creating 4,016 indecent images of children.
Dempster will be sentenced on November 13. One misconduct charge highlights that in 2022, during missing person inquiries, he recorded interactions with children and their families on his body camera, later transferring these images to his mobile device.
The second charge involves photographing a vulnerable child during a domestic incident for personal gratification. Of the indecent images created, 104 fall under the most severe category.
At a previous hearing, Dempster admitted to inappropriate conduct with a minor while on duty. Ongoing police investigations mean further charges are possible, as stated by prosecutor Vanessa Thomson.
Dean Dempster, a former Army reservist and GMP officer since 2021, was dismissed in May. He was arrested on New Year's Eve for his offences.
Judge Stuart Driver, KC, postponed sentencing to allow for psychiatric and probationary evaluations, noting the certainty of a lengthy incarceration and the potential for an extended sentence to protect the public. Dempster remains in custody, registered as a sex offender.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson confirmed Dempster's suspension, with misconduct proceedings set to continue post-criminal trial.
