Ewan Hughes, of Lowther Court in Prestwich, 25, was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court to 12 months in prison for possession of a bladed article, affray and dangerous driving.

Hughes claimed he was approached by two men who were hostile due to an earlier incident involving a friend. Feeling threatened, Hughes pulled out a knife he was carrying, stating, “I pulled out a knife I was carrying and held it at waist height.” He later admitted, “I accept that, at the time, this action was excessive in the circumstances.”

Despite Hughes's threat to stab the men if they approached, they armed themselves with a golf club and continued the attack, as per the prosecution's account by Jess Foster.

Following the altercation, a security guard intervened. In his statement, he expressed feeling threatened by the situation, stating, “I felt very threatened, particularly when these males brandished weapons. I feared for my life, it was very frightening but I was trying to restrain these males to protect everyone else.”

Defending, Bob Sastry, noted that Hughes has matured since the incident and distanced himself from those involved. However, Judge Alan Conrad KC determined that imprisonment was inevitable, given Hughes had previously received a suspended sentence in March 2021.

Now 25 and working as a labourer, Hughes was sentenced to 12 months in prison for charges including possession of a bladed article, affray, and a separate instance of dangerous driving that took place on November 20, 2021.
