Erica Anderson and Son Darius: Harpurhey Drug Case Updates

In a troubling case in Harpurhey, Erica Anderson, 50, faced court proceedings after police discovered a significant amount of cannabis at her home, leading to her son's drug-related conviction.

The incident unfolded in 2021 when police executed a search warrant at Erica's residence on Ashley Street. Simultaneously, officers raided her son Darius Anderson's home. The total quantity of drugs recovered from both locations was estimated to be worth between £8,277 and £11,365, as reported by Manchester Crown Court.

Darius Anderson, 28, described as a 'low-level' drug dealer, had stored cannabis, scales, and cash at his mother's home, involving her unknowingly in his illicit activities. Recorder of Manchester, Judge Nicholas Dean KC, noted during sentencing: “She is a victim of her son’s behaviour, at the end of the day.”

Darius received a 30-month prison sentence for possession with intent to supply class B drugs, having previously violated a suspended sentence order. Meanwhile, Erica, who expressed deep remorse, was given a community order.

During the search, officials found 151.7 grams of cannabis worth £1,500, along with additional drugs, scales, and cash at Erica's home. Darius’ residence yielded another 143 grams of cannabis and a quantity of cash.

Erica claimed ignorance of the drugs present in her home. The case took a further turn in May when police returned and found an additional large quantity of cannabis and further deals in the garden.

Darius had an extensive criminal history with 14 prior convictions for 29 offences, including similar drug charges. Notably, he was previously involved in an incident where police found drugs and cash in a vehicle he was traveling in.

Defending Darius, Constance Halliwell highlighted his remorse and his efforts to improve himself for the sake of his young daughter, acknowledging his struggles with mental health issues.

Erica was described as having no prior convictions. Her barrister, Graham Rishton, stated that she felt profound shame and embarrassment. Erica, a mother of four, previously worked in social services and is currently a carer for her daughter with significant mental health needs.

Judge Dean KC addressed Erica directly, acknowledging her as a victim of her son's actions while reaffirming the responsibility she bore for permitting drug storage in her home. Ultimately, Erica was sentenced to a 12-month community order and required to adhere to a two-month electronically monitored curfew from 9:30 PM to 6 AM, having pleaded guilty to allowing her premises to be used for drug-related offences.
