Dream Holiday Turns Into Nightmare: Friends Caught Smuggling Drugs

Two friends, Sophie Bannister (30) from Manchester and Levi-April Whalley (31) from Blackburn, have spoken out after being caught smuggling £160,000 worth of drugs on a flight from New York to the UK.

Their ordeal began with an Instagram message inviting them to New York for a "simple favour." After a three-day shopping spree, they were stopped at Birmingham International Airport, where 35 kg of cannabis was found in their suitcases.

During the search, 70 heat-sealed packages of cannabis were discovered, despite Whalley claiming they contained watches. Both women later pleaded guilty to fraudulent evasion of prohibition.

Prior to their arrest, the duo documented their travels across social media, sharing photos from various locations, including Times Square.

On December 2023, they confessed to Border Force officials about their shopping trip to New York. However, the truth emerged about their criminal activity.

At Preston Crown Court, both women received suspended sentences: Bannister was given 20 months, and Whalley received 16 months. The court acknowledged their vulnerability due to personal and financial challenges.

Reflecting on their circumstances, Bannister explained that their journey into drug smuggling started with a social media offer. "We were stupid and naïve," she admitted, highlighting their lack of awareness regarding the potential consequences.

Despite their excitement about the trip, they were completely unaware of the contents of their luggage. A judge later pointed out their significant awareness of carrying a large quantity of cannabis.

Upon being caught, Whalley expressed how devastating the moment was, saying, "Our hearts sank." The reality of their situation became painfully clear as they faced the aftermath of their decisions.

Following their arrest, Bannister suffered a panic attack and was not placed in a police cell, while Whalley spent 24 hours in detention. Both returned home to life-altering consequences: Bannister was estranged from her family, and Whalley lost her nursing job.

The pair faced intense scrutiny online after their sentencing. Whalley described receiving harsh messages, while Bannister expressed gratitude for the support from friends and family during their challenging times.

Judge Richard Archer remarked that the drugs did not belong to them, but highlighted that they sought financial gain from their actions. He urged them to contemplate their choices moving forward.

Bannister and Whalley must complete community service and rehabilitation programs as part of their sentencing. Despite their challenging journey over the last 15 months, they have expressed a desire to move forward and grow from this experience.
