In a tragic incident at Manchester's Caribbean Carnival, 20-year-old Javell Morgan was fatally stabbed during a violent clash between rival gangs from Huddersfield. The violence erupted last summer in Moss Side, where Morgan was targeted with a 'samurai sword' by 21-year-old Jacob Doughty.
A witness reported that Doughty was seen laughing during the attack, later celebrating with others nearby. After a trial at Manchester Crown Court, he was found guilty of murder, along with Deontay Crosfield, 22, who was involved in the conflict that led to the murder.
The conflict unfolded on Claremont Road in Moss Side, shortly after midnight on August 15, when two opposing groups from Huddersfield turned the street party after the main carnival into a battleground. Armed with guns and knives, both sides engaged in a brief but deadly confrontation.
Javell Morgan was eventually cornered and suffered multiple stab wounds, which ultimately proved fatal. Doughty later disposed of the weapon and was apprehended in Huddersfield. Authorities later found and retrieved the weapon, consolidating the evidence against Doughty and Crosfield.
Despite Doughty's defense claim of acting in self-defense, the jury did not find his testimony credible, leading to his conviction for murder. Both Doughty and Crosfield are facing life sentences, with sentencing scheduled for later this month. The case sheds light on the grave repercussions of gang violence impacting community events.
