A notorious rapist, who evaded capture for over two decades, has finally been imprisoned.
Maboob Bostan assaulted a teenager and two women in the 1990s, later using a fake passport to escape the UK while on bail. Despite his absence, law enforcement persisted, and Bostan was apprehended in January upon his return at Manchester Airport.
The 54-year-old, previously residing in Batley, West Yorkshire, was sentenced for his known crimes and an additional rape offense revealed through advanced forensic testing.
West Yorkshire Police labeled him a 'dangerous individual' and remained resolute in their search for him. Bostan's attacks included a teenage girl in Batley in January 1997 and a woman in her 20s, also in Batley, in February 1998.
In 2006, Operation Recall, a specialist team of West Yorkshire Police, reviewed old cases leveraging advancements in forensic evidence focusing on sexual offenses.
A pivotal DNA breakthrough connected Bostan to another rape case involving a woman in her 30s at Manningham Park, Bradford, which occurred in September 1997. Efforts were made to extradite Bostan from Pakistan, where he had taken refuge.
Bostan's arrest at Manchester Airport in January this year led to charges for the additional Bradford offense.
Bostan, who initially faced trial in July, pled guilty to three rape charges at its onset. At his sentencing in Leeds Crown Court on September 27, he received a sentence of 24 years in prison, followed by an extended six-year licence period.
Post-sentencing, Detective Inspector Stephen King, leading the Operation Recall team, expressed sympathy for the victims, hoping the verdict provides them with some solace and closure.
"Maboob Bostan fled the country to escape accountability for his crimes, but our efforts to bring him to justice never ceased," said DI King. "We pursued his extradition as recent as 2022 after further investigations linked him conclusively to the Bradford offense through forensic breakthroughs. Bostan is undeniably a threat to women. His lengthy imprisonment ensures justice has been served. Our dedicated child and adult safeguarding teams are always available, and I encourage any victims of sexual offenses to reach out to us."
