Community Struggles on Rochdale's Freehold Estate

The Freehold estate in Rochdale has faced significant challenges over recent years, from the tragic death of a toddler due to mould exposure to ongoing issues with crime and anti-social behaviour.

After the death of two-year-old Awaab Ishak due to prolonged exposure to mould, the issues on the estate have amplified. Despite a successful campaign to improve housing conditions, residents now face a different struggle—rampant crime and anti-social behaviour.

The collaboration between Greater Manchester Police and Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, known as Operation Affect, has led to significant interventions. Drugs have been seized, suspects arrested, and crime hotbeds shut down, though issues persist.

A young woman living on the estate described her growing fear due to increasing crime, mirroring concerns of other residents. She mentioned witnessing violent attacks and explained how anti-social behaviour perpetuates a sense of vulnerability among her neighbours.

One tenant recounted his experience, detailing frequent disruptions by drug dealers and the pervasive feeling of insecurity. Another resident feared for his children's safety due to the constant presence of drug users and the ease with which they operate on the estate.

Despite efforts by RBH to improve housing conditions and safety, the estate continues to suffer from deep-seated issues. Instances of harassment, property damage, and fear-mongering by criminals create a hostile living environment.

RBH and GMP are actively addressing these problems. Residents have noticed more frequent policing and community engagements aimed at reducing crime and restoring safety. Significant arrests and seizures have been part of the ongoing 'clear, hold, build' initiative that aligns with broader efforts to reclaim and improve the estate.

As local authorities and housing bodies continue their efforts, the goal is to transform Freehold into a safe and welcoming community. However, given the long-standing nature of these issues, these changes might take time and require persistent effort from all stakeholders.
