As Christmas approaches, police have issued an urgent warning regarding a rise in distraction thefts. Greater Manchester Police are urging residents to be 'extra vigilant,' particularly in busy town centres.
According to the force, 'groups of offenders' are targeting victims in crowded areas, specifically those who have just withdrawn money from banks or are engaged in shopping activities.
This warning follows a recent incident in Ashton-under-Lyne town centre, where a woman lost a 'considerable amount of money' to a thief employing a distraction technique.
The victim had just taken money from her bank when she was approached by an offender who used a disguise to remain unidentifiable.
In their warning, Greater Manchester Police advised: "Please ensure that when using cash machines, you shield your PIN while entering it and remain aware of your surroundings during cash withdrawals."
Police noted, "Offenders may attempt to distract individuals at cash machines to steal cards and/or money during the distraction. Similar tactics have been observed in stores and shopping centres involving pickpocketing."
They concluded with a reminder: "Please be mindful of your personal security. Keep purses, wallets, and bags secured and out of reach whenever possible. Don't let thieves ruin your Christmas."
