On November 10, horrified students were awakened by a loud bang in the early hours, discovering the burning wreckage of a car at the bottom of their garden.
Residents on Anson Road reported the noise around 2 AM. When they stepped outside, they encountered a car engulfed in flames after crashing into a lamppost.
Eyewitnesses described a heavy police presence in the area, with both marked and unmarked cars. There are unconfirmed reports that the vehicle was involved in a chase with Greater Manchester Police.
A fire crew from Gorton responded quickly, extinguishing the flames and ensuring the scene was safe within approximately 10 minutes. An ambulance was also confirmed to be present.
19-year-old student Charles McGreavy recounted, "It was about 1 AM when I was knocked on my door by my housemate, who said there's a car on fire. It had crashed into a lamppost right outside the house."
He added, "We thought we would have to evacuate the house. It was a huge fire. There were police outside, including an undercover car, and the fire kept getting bigger."
He continued, "Once the fire was out, police informed us that it was a high-speed chase that ended with the crash into the telephone pole."
Fellow student Lana Sloan-Davies, 20, also witnessed the incident, stating, "I woke up to a really loud bang. I didn't think much of it at first because it's Manchester."
"When I went outside, the car was metres high in flames. It was completely engulfed. A fire engine arrived and started to douse the flames. An ambulance did not appear. It was all very strange."
Lana added, "I eventually went back inside after about half an hour, once the fire was under control. There were numerous police cars, including unmarked ones."
"At first, I didn't think much of it until I saw people outside," she said. "Multiple people mentioned it sounded like a police chase that ended in a car crash and an explosion of flames."
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service stated, “At around 2:35 AM on November 10, one fire engine responded to a fire involving a car, a cycle lamp post, and a traffic lamp post. Crews utilized breathing apparatus and one hose reel to extinguish the fire, spending approximately 10 minutes on scene."
Greater Manchester Police are currently leading the investigation into the incident, and both GMP and North West Ambulance Service have been contacted for further comment.
