In a shocking courtroom revelation, Ben Fitton, a 33-year-old rapist, expressed a chilling lack of remorse, stating that he would 'celebrate' if his victim died. Fitton made this comment towards a probation officer, dismissing his victim as a 'horrible, life-ruining b****'.
Fitton was sentenced to 18 years in prison by Judge Peter Horgan, who pointed out Fitton's concerning attitude towards women and the high risk he poses of future domestic violence. The judge noted, "Your complete and utter lack of remorse is alarming." Fitton was found guilty after a five-week trial on multiple charges, including two counts of rape, non-fatal strangulation, and causing grievous bodily harm.
The court proceedings took place at Manchester Crown Court, where prosecutor Nicola Carroll outlined the extensive abuse that Fitton inflicted on his victim over several years. She detailed his violent behavior, including isolating her from friends and family, humiliating her, and making various threats, which led to the victim attempting to take her own life.
One incident involved Fitton violently pushing her to the ground, resulting in severe injuries that required hospitalization. On two occasions, he raped her, threatening with boiling water and later attacking her driven by jealousy and paranoia.
After enduring years of abuse, the victim bravely reached out for help through Greater Manchester Police's online chat service, leading to Fitton's arrest.
In a powerful victim statement, she recounted the devastating impact on her life, including significant weight loss, loss of contact with loved ones, and severe psychological harm. She explained how Fitton controlled many aspects of her life, from finances to social interactions.
She concluded her statement with a heartfelt hope that Fitton would not harm anyone else and expressed her desire for no other person to endure similar suffering.
Prosecutors highlighted her immense bravery in testifying, as well as the lasting trauma she experienced.
During sentencing, Judge Horgan commended the victim’s strength and addressed Fitton's dismissive attitude toward her suffering, stating, “You maintain she planned all of this and claimed you would celebrate her death. This attitude persists to this day.”
Fitton, originally from Glossop in Derbyshire but without a fixed address, received a total sentence of 21 years, consisting of 18 years in prison and an additional three years on extended license. He is required to serve two-thirds of his sentence before the Parole Board considers his release and is forbidden from contacting the victim and her family. He must also register as a sex offender for life.
Detective Constable Russ Clarke from Rochdale CID praised the victim’s resilience, stating, “Nobody should have to endure what she did at the hands of Ben Fitton." He emphasized that Fitton’s campaign of abuse was unprecedented in his experience, revealing a disturbing pattern of jealousy, paranoia, and manipulation.
Clarke urged other victims of domestic violence to come forward, assuring them of the support available, whether they choose to report the abuse or not.
