Alberto Ursu Stabbing Incident in Rochdale - January 2025

A man who died after an alleged stabbing on New Year's Day has been officially named for the first time as Alberto Ursu, aged 38. The incident occurred on Essex Street in Rochdale in the early hours of Wednesday, January 1.

On January 9, a 30-year-old man, Hassan Suliman, appeared before magistrates charged with the murder of Mr. Ursu. Suliman, from Rothesay Terrace, is also facing charges of Section 47 assault, Section 39 assault, possession of an offensive weapon, and possession of a bladed article.

Following his court appearance at Wigan Magistrates Court, Suliman has been remanded in custody and will next appear at Manchester Crown Court, with the case scheduled for 10.30am tomorrow (Friday).

Emergency services responded to the scene on Essex Street at approximately 2.40am on New Year's Day, where Mr. Ursu was discovered suffering from a severe knife wound.

The investigation is ongoing, and Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is appealing for anyone with information to come forward. Detective Inspector Paul Davies of GMP's Major Incident Team stated: “I would like to once again pay tribute to the victim. It is another tragic incident that has seen a member of the Rochdale community needlessly lose their life."

He continued, "We have been, and will continue to support his family during this difficult time. We appeal to anyone with any information to contact us on 101 quoting incident 715 of January 1, 2025."
